Coined by author Dr. James Austin and popularized by Naval Ravikant, the 4 types of luck can help you create some lucky breaks for yourself.

Before we get into tips, let’s take a closer look at each type!

🎲 1. Blind Luck

Blind luck is what we typically think of when we talk about luck — moments of good fortune that happen seemingly at random.

Winning something (like a giveaway or the lottery) is the most obvious example of blind luck. But this type of luck also includes some circumstances out of your control, like where you were born.

This type of luck can significantly influence your life, but it doesn’t have to limit your potential.

🏃‍♀️ 2. Luck from Motion

This is the kind of luck you create by doing things that get you closer to where you want to be.

And the more action you take, the luckier you’ll be.

This might seem counterintuitive, given how “luck” is typically defined. But it’s also the idea behind other mindsets, like manifesting.

If you want good fortune to find you, don’t just sit around and wait for it — attract it by working for it!

🕵️ 3. Luck from Awareness

This type of luck comes from preparing well.

Receiving opportunities is only half the battle. You also need to put yourself in the best possible position to win the opportunities that come your way.

For example, completing a lot of applications makes you more likely to find a job. But you can increase your odds even more by brushing up on your interview skills and researching the companies you’re applying for.

Plus, the more prepared you are, the better you’ll be at recognizing opportunities in the future!

🧚 4. Luck from Uniqueness

This type of luck comes from things that are unique to you — your expertise, your story, and how you show up in work and life.

It includes the opportunities that find you because you’ve made yourself a memorable, obvious choice.

Writer and speaker Ellie Middleton is a good example of luck from uniqueness.

In 2022, Ellie started posting about her experience with ADHD on LinkedIn.

Two years later, Ellie is now a household name for all things ADHD, autism, and neurodivergence. She’s given multiple interviews with the likes of TED and BBC, and she’s also got 2 books published with Penguin.

Ellie created luck through motion by putting herself out there with that first LinkedIn post. But it wasn’t just motion that spurred on her success — part of her luck comes from her authenticity, personality, and style.

Now that you know the kinds of luck you can create for yourself, here’s how to make your life a little more lucky!

This is the main thing you should take away from today’s email.

Spend less time thinking about what you need to do, and more time actually doing it.

The more you do, the “luckier” you’ll be — whether that’s sending more emails, applying to more jobs, going to more events, putting out more content, studying those extra few chapters, meeting more people. The list goes on!

Yes, you’ll make mistakes. Yes, you’ll inevitably feel like you’re “wasting” time doing the “wrong” things. When those emotions pop up, don’t shy away from them immediately. Feel them fully so you can learn the lessons they’re trying to teach you, then get back to work.

🧠 2. Have a growth mindset

A growth mindset is essential for creating your own luck.

Having a growth mindset means:

  • Staying curious

  • Believing the world is your oyster

  • Seeing new challenges as learning opportunities

One of the best ways to increase your luck is through connection with others.

Your network can support you when times get rough, guide you when you’re feeling stuck, and even recommend you for opportunities.

Luck doesn’t happen in isolation. Nurture your relationships with your network, and watch your luck grow!
